UFC 206: Pettis, Holloway, and Fake Belts - Picks and Predictions

Oh UFC 206 how I wish I could love thee justly. But alas, your foibles loom too large, but most none of it is your fault as fighters. Don't get me wrong, as a Fight Night or a Fox card, this event is great. We have divisional relevance, the long awaited return of high level contenders, but this event is not what you call Pay-Per-View worthy. And that was all before #BeltGate. I have seen many Conor detractors relish in him being stripped of his belt. Many outcries of "well you can't hold up the division" or "he took three fights outside the weight class!" and those are all fair, but none of those factors change the simple truth that Holloway and Pettis would not be fighting for a belt if it were not for the injury of Daniel Cormier. The timing stinks. The reasoning, truly short-sighted. The real reasoning, not the perpetual lies of one Dana F. White. I get he's a promoter, but years of following this sport has made me weary of his partial truths and blatant lies. 

And now we have a late update (edit) from Doc Law himself that Mr. Tony Pettis has missed weight. Now it was REALLY worth it to strip Conor in some futile hope of salvaging this card right? A man who was 1-3 in his last four fights may have become a champion... and now he might still knock out a title challenger, but not be champion for it. Ladies and gentlemen, this is 2016.

I had some real analysis for this fight, but the recent break of Pettis missing weight and this pointless interim title fight now being a non-interim title fight... to quote Comic Book Guy, there is NO emoticon for what I feel right now. You heard it on the podcast, I am a heavy lean on Holloway from the start as he brings a power and style that I think could shutdown Pettis. Pettis is an always dangerous striker in his own right, but that post-championship skid really makes you sour on a guy. Now the weight thing. Part of me just wants the full chaos of Pettis winning so maybe, just maybe, the UFC will realize the error of their ways, but it's 2016 and I'm not meant to be happy. Holloway has been absolutely devastating since his loss to Conor, and I expect the Hawaiian tide to keep rising. Holloway by unanimous decision.

UFC on FOX 21: Maia vs. Condit (Plus a little Bellator 160)

I don't know about you all, but I am still buzzing from last week's fights.  But time waits for no man.  UFC goes back to the great north, making some fight plans in Vancouver.  The top three fights are very intriguing.  The main event has potential #1 contender implications, the co-main event has the feather-weight debut of a former champion, and the third fight has the return of a mega-star fresh of her dazzling performance on "Dancing with the Stars".  Still bull@#$% she got robbed out of the crystal ball trophy.  Also, we preview the Bellator main event.

UFC 197: Jones v. Saint Preux Picks and Predictions

Let April 23rd be known as the return. Jon Jones, the last vestige of pure greatness in the MMA landscape, returns from his indefinite suspension due to his well documented legal and criminal battles. Think about it. In the time Jones was away, the sport saw Conor choked out by Nate, Aldo flatlined by Conor, Ronda head-kicked into oblivion by Holms, who herself would go out to Miesha's choke. Anderson's tumble would continue against Bisping, and even the spider killer himself, Chris Weidman would drop his belt to Luke Rockhold. With the exception of the other champion in the co-main event slot, Mighty Mouse, our picture of the invincibles in the UFC have dropped like flies.  With all due respect to one Mr. OSP, the world awaits what Jon Jones brings to the table in his return.

UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw v. Cruz Predictions

TJ Dillashaw (c) v. Dominick Cruz

We are only a few days away and I'm still not convinced this fight is going to happen. You can't really blame me, Dominick Cruz has 4 leg injuries in the last 4 years and has only fought once in that time frame. Regardless, the man who never lost the bantamweight title in the cage returns to reclaim what was his against a surging TJ Dillashaw. In Cruz's absense, Dillashaw has managed to take the UFC bantamweight title off of a very tough champion in Renan Barao and do so with a style that appears to borrow heavily from Cruz's movement-heavy approach. This is a very tough fight to call, but I'm going with Dominick Cruz. He has managed to convince me that ring rust wont be an issue and I remember his fights from before the injury. In a nutshell: he hits you and you can't hit him back. Dillashaw has been great, but I think Dominick solves the puzzle. Cruz by decision.

UFC 185: Pettis vs Dos Anjos picks and analysis

Welcome to the Show. The poster says it all. Anthony "Showtime" Pettis has proven to be one of the more infuriating fighters in recent UFC history. On the one hand, he is dynamite MUST SEE TV. On the other, he is prone to injury and has experienced long layoffs between many of his fights. Fortunately, it is fight week and knock on wood, we're going to get a cold glass of seltzer in a hot July, and that is a TREAT my friends. On the other side of the cage Pettis will meet a confident Rafael Dos Anjos that will be unafraid to stand with Showtime. Anything bad I ever said about Dos Anjos went out the window when he became the first man to ever knock out Benson Henderson. Let us not however, forget about the ladies. I see you Ms. Esparza, go get you another ridiculously expensive sundae! Carla Esparza makes her inaugural title defense against surging champion of the Polish people, Joanna "I had to copy/paste this to spell it right" Jedrzejczyk. It looks like it shall be a throwback match-up of the grappler vs the striker.  Will history's trend of favoring the former continue?

Anthony Pettis (c) vs. Rafael Dos Anjos

Even though Pettis' UFC career began with a lowlight loss to Clay Guida, he has looked nothing short of a generational talent ever since. Pettis has been able to put together his exceptional athleticism, supremely technical striking, vastly improved takedown defense, and always dangerous submission game into what became the first MMA fighter to get that Wheaties box cover. Dos Anjos has time and time again proven myself to be wrong in doubting him as he has emerged as one of the best all around fighters in the division. This seems like its will be a game of "anything you can do, I can do better" for Pettis though, and I can't see many avenues to victory for Dos Anjos. I expect him to come to fight, be willing to stand, but ultimately lose. Pettis by KO round 2.

UFC Welterweight Championship

Johny Hendricks (champion) vs. Robbie Lawler

When a fight is as good as the first one is, there is always a chance the second disappoints.  That's likely not the case with two free swinging fighters who are always looking to knock their opponent's head off.  Lawler has fought twice since, looking dominant while Hendricks on the other hand has been on the shelf since winning the title so there is always the worry of ring-rust.  Their first fight was a veritable barn-burner of a match which Hendricks won by the slightest of margins.  Hendricks fought with a torn bicep for nearly the entire fight which limited his ability to get the takedown.  While he won't shy away from standing and banging with Lawler, Hendricks utilizes his wrestling much more this time around to better control the action.  Hendricks wins this one going away.

Undisputed UFC Flyweight Championship

Demetrious Johnson (c) v. John Dodson

Doctor Law: It’s pretty clear these guys fight at a lower weight class because there is no way a heavyweight or light heavyweight could get away with either of those nicknames (Demetrious Johnson = Mighty Mouse, John Dodson = The Magician). This fight can be summed up pretty simply for me: Can Dodson do what Benavidez couldn't and get a hold of Mighty Mouse long enough to actually do some damage? Dodson is very explosive and has shown good power. He even knocked out TJ Dillashaw to win TUF 16 at bantamweight. I’m not a big fan of how Mighty Mouse fights, but it’s awfully effective. He sticks and moves to victories in the same vain as Dominick Cruz and Frankie Edgar. I’m going to answer “no” that question above and say that Mighty Mouse pulls off the victory. Then again, what kind of nutty strategy has Greg Jackson come up with for this title fight? Mighty Mouse by clear decision.

DJ Mark with a "K": On paper I can see this fight being very tactical and thus maybe a little on the boring side. Johnson has been a decision machine and while his style of fighting has been very successful (dude’s champ after all) he hasn't really made a fan out of me yet. On the other hand Dodson has some pretty heavy hands and has been able to get some KOs/TKOs. I know it’s a super long shot but for some really strange reason I have a feeling this is going to be a fun match up and Dodson will catch Johnson late in the fight. This prediction defies logic so I’m fully prepared to be 100% wrong here. Dodson by TKO 1:24 into 4^th round.

Kid Presentable: Mighty Mouse is fast.  The Magician is fast.  Dodson oddly has KO power in such a diminutive weight class, but Mighty Mouse has only gone to decisions for the last two years.  Scrambles, clinches, chasing around the cage oh my! I don't have high expectations for this fight, but I also have a solid history of making a lot of incorrect calls in MMA.  I have been a heavy Mighty Mouse lean since this fight was announced, but after realizing what Dodson's nickname was, I decided to say bollocks to it and be bold.  Brutalitops, The MAGICIAN, by decision.

Lavender Gooms: This fight could go one of two ways.  It will either be an exciting fast paced fight between two elf-sized martial artists or it will be a boring fight where two small dudes just dance around each other and cause no damage.  That’s normally one of the problems with 125ers but I don’t think that will be the case here.  Dodson has some pop in those gloves, having two KO’s in his three UFC bouts and Mighty Mouse seems incapable of giving me a fight I’m bored with.  Both fighters have adequate to good ground games and stand up.  The tipping point in this fight will be the experience which Johnson has against top flight talent.  That will be the difference. Mighty Mouse by unanimous decision.
