UFC 205: McGregor vs. Alvarez Fight Predictions

To say the last few days have been challenging would be an understatement.  I fully expected on Monday morning that later in the week I would be writing a euphoric article about MMA returning to my beloved home state of New York and how sad I was to be 6500 miles away in Japan for this momentous occasion.  Instead......the world got flipped, turned upside down.  I still haven't recovered from the shock of a reality TV star (along with being a bigot and sexist) becoming the 45th President of the United States so I can't do euphoric.  Let's get to some picks.

UFC Fight Night 90: Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez

It's the start of international fight week, where just counting the UFC cards, there are over 20 fights and five title matches in a three-day span.  The week kicks off with the UFC Lightweight title up for grabs as Rafael Dos Anjos scraps it up with former Bellator  Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw v. Cruz Predictions

The former champ returns to take what he never lost. A wild battle of top 5 lightweights. The big boys throwing down at heavyweight. All of that and more taking place on this special Sunday UFC card. Check out our predictions below.

UFC Bantamweight Championship
TJ Dillashaw (c) v. Dominick Cruz

We are only a few days away and I'm still not convinced this fight is going to happen. You can't really blame me, Dominick Cruz has 4 leg injuries in the last 4 years and has only fought once in that time frame. Regardless, the man who never lost the bantamweight title in the cage returns to reclaim what was his against a surging TJ Dillashaw. In Cruz's absense, Dillashaw has managed to take the UFC bantamweight title off of a very tough champion in Renan Barao and do so with a style that appears to borrow heavily from Cruz's movement-heavy approach. This is a very tough fight to call, but I'm going with Dominick Cruz. He has managed to convince me that ring rust wont be an issue and I remember his fights from before the injury. In a nutshell: he hits you and you can't hit him back. Dillashaw has been great, but I think Dominick solves the puzzle. Cruz by decision.

UFC 188: Velasquez vs. Werdum Predictions

As the old saying goes, if at first you don't succeed pray to God Cain Velasquez doesn't get injured again. Seems UFC has been praying to the MMA Gods and at least for now they have listened! After Cain wasn't able to compete at UFC 180 in Mexico City, the UFC decided not to walk away from the table and threw those dice again and what we have is one hell of a Pay Per View event. Cain is defending his belt against a primed and game Werdum and the co-main event is a dream match five years in the making when Gilbert Melendez finally faces off with Eddie Alvarez.

Bellator's first pay-per-view card is being headlined by two legends of the sport.  The only problem with legends is that normally means their old and their best days are way past them.  As a result the common thought was that for Bellator's first pay-per-view event to be considered watchable (and buyable), it would need to add fights that people actually wanted to see.  Michael Chandler was a name being thrown around and after his showing last week it would have been stupid to not have him on the card.  Boy did Bellator deliver.  Not only have they turned a card I had no interest in watching into something I will drop some schillings for, they have booked one of the most anticipated rematches in the last few years.

Alvarez, who hasn't fought since October 2012 and signed a free agent deal with the UFC, has been involved in a bitter lawsuit with Bellator over their contract provision to match any offer from another promotion.  Considering that Bellator's owner Viacom primarily deals with basic cable, the thought was Bellator was producing a pay-per-view card solely to keep Alvarez from winning his court battle.  However, it seems time (and likely a boatload of PPV money) heals all wounds, when Alvarez told USA Today, "I couldn't be happier right now...We've been trying to settle since the very beginning of this.  We were able to compromise and put it behind us.  I'm happy to put my name on the dotted line and move forward with my career."

Ariel Helwani of mmafighting.com reported that sources said if Alvarez loses he is free to walk away but if he beats Chandler he'll be contractually obligated to do a trilogy.  So while it seems that Alvarez isn't long for the Bellator ring, the fighting audience will be left with one or potentially two more fights between these two top ten lightweights.
