UFC 205: McGregor vs. Alvarez Fight Predictions

To say the last few days have been challenging would be an understatement.  I fully expected on Monday morning that later in the week I would be writing a euphoric article about MMA returning to my beloved home state of New York and how sad I was to be 6500 miles away in Japan for this momentous occasion.  Instead......the world got flipped, turned upside down.  I still haven't recovered from the shock of a reality TV star (along with being a bigot and sexist) becoming the 45th President of the United States so I can't do euphoric.  Let's get to some picks.

UFC 201: Lawler v. Woodley Predictions

The UFC brings the Octagon to Atlanta to showcase a battle for the UFC Welterweight title. On one side you got a guy who is out there talking about maybe the most exciting champion we've ever had. On the other you have a guy whose last fight was on the silver screen with the members of N.W.A. (solid movie). In the co-main event we have a possible title eliminator between Rose Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Despite not possessing a ton of star power, the rest of the card is filled with action packed match ups. Check out our predictions below.

Robbie Lawler (c) v. Tyron Woodley

Robbie Lawler making his third title defe...you know what. We need to talk about something first. Lawler's talking about taking people's souls. Their souls. That is some terrifying sh*t. Look at the look on his face in that video. Does it seem like he's playing? As I was saying, this is Mr. Lawler's 3rd defense of his welterweight title. At no point during his title reign has his championship seemed secure. As our own Kid Presentable will tell you: at some point this is going to end in disaster. It's a matter of if, not when. I do not believe said disaster is going to happen this weekend in Atlanta. Tyron Woodley is an excellent fighter and a worthy title challenger (even though two other guys may be more worthy). As I said on the podcast, Woodley has about 7 minutes to finish Lawler. I honestly don't believe he has the gas tank to win three out of five rounds. Lawler has been knocked out once in his career and it was twelve years ago. Woodley isn't exactly Rickson on the ground either. While this  is a time where no title seems safe, I'm going with Lawler by 3rd round KO.

UFC 192: Cormier vs. Gustafsson Predictions

While many fans look at current Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier as merely a place holder until Jon Jones can return to the UFC, he still has to fulfill his championship duties and defend his belt (disputed or otherwise) against a difficult and game opponent in Alexander Gustafsson. In addition to that fight we also have two potential title eliminators when Johny Hendricks collides with Tyron Woodley and Rashad Evans finally returns to the octagon to take on the rampaging (I can say that because he beat Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson) Ryan Bader.

UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz Picks

One of the key match-ups for the UFC's 'The Time is Now' promotion has been the highly anticipated Super Fight between former UFC champion Anderson Silva and fan favorite Nick Diaz. The wait is just about over, but before we witness one of the most intriguing match ups in UFC history, let's break down this, and the other pay per view fights taking place at UFC 183.

Anderson Silva vs Nick Diaz

This is a dream match up, and one that previously just seemed like a pipe dream. However, after a serious leg breaking injury for Silva, and a couple inactive years for Diaz, this match just kinda makes sense right now for the fighters and the fans. On paper this should be a great action fight as both guys like to push the pace, especially Diaz. Personally, unless Silva is just no longer the fighter he once was, I think Anderson should match up well against Diaz. I believe that Silva has the advantages in power, movement and the ability to finish the fight. That being said, some fighters just can't deal with Diaz's volume of strikes when he's at his best. If Silva is  hesitant throwing kicks because of his last injury it's not crazy to think he might just be over whelmed by Diaz's aggression. The x-­factors going into the fight are the big questions in this one. How has the injury effected Silva's offense? Will Diaz have ring rust? Either way I suspect an entertaining fight out of these two. Silva by TKO 2nd round.

Georges St-Pierre (c) v. Johny Hendricks

Doctor Law: Keep the distance, circle left and jab. That’s how GSP gets it done. Now that I got that out of the way, I need to get something off my chest. Johny Hendricks has no idea what he’s talking about when it comes to drug testing. As such, he really shouldn’t be talking about it. He doesn’t trust VADA, but says he will “do WADA.” Ok, let’s get some sh*t straight. WADA doesn’t drug test. They just don’t. They set standards. Do you know what VADA does? They use WADA accredited labs to test people. Also, Hendricks solution to the “I don’t trust VADA” thing was basically to just do no extra testing doesn’t look good. I would never accuse him of being anything because it would be a ridiculous thing to say about a man who has competed at such a high level for so many years with no proof to suggest any impropriety (like GSP), but he needs to handle these situations better. Step 1: don’t talk about sh*t you have no idea about. GSP by decision.

Kid Presentable: Let me start with the fact that Hendricks is legit. Many wrestle-boxers have come before him, but this man packs a Falcon Punch in his left hand. He has earned his shot, and though it was a long road to get to this point, really is the top contender in the division. That said, I seem to always pick against him and this day will be no different. GSP is simply too complete of a fighter. Every other fighter has some noticeable weakness, and GSP will play to that. Like most guys who have KO power, that power wanes as the fight drags on, and few know about dragging an opponent into the deep waters like GSP. GSP by unanimous NOS Active.

DJ Mark: It’s really hard to pick against a guy that hasn’t lost since 2007. Many have criticized GSP in the past of playing it a little safe against some opponents many think he could have finished, but at the end of the night he still won all those fights. Hendricks has the tools to win here and has shown his ability to do so as seen in his highlight reel. The problem is only Matt Serra has been able to do what Hendricks hopes to do on Saturday night. I honestly think it’s a very close fight but I’m play it safe like I normally do, GSP dec.

Lavender Gooms: We’ve seen this script before.  Hard hitting All-American wrestler who challenges the welterweight champion (Koscheck, Josh).   In the first movie, our hero took down the upstart and in the sequel our gilded hero unveiled a crisp and masterful jab that’s rarely seen in MMA.  If were a betting man (I am) I would bet the farm on GSP utilizing the same game plan he used in his rematch against Koscheck, staying out of range of Hendricks power while peppering him for five rounds with jabs.  While Hendricks won’t suffer a broken orbital bone like the last person who played his role, it will end in a one sided boxing match with the occasional takedown stuffed.  GSP by decision.
