UFC 205: McGregor vs. Alvarez Fight Predictions

To say the last few days have been challenging would be an understatement.  I fully expected on Monday morning that later in the week I would be writing a euphoric article about MMA returning to my beloved home state of New York and how sad I was to be 6500 miles away in Japan for this momentous occasion.  Instead......the world got flipped, turned upside down.  I still haven't recovered from the shock of a reality TV star (along with being a bigot and sexist) becoming the 45th President of the United States so I can't do euphoric.  Let's get to some picks.

UFC Fight Night: MacDonald v. Thompson Predictions

After a crazy UFC 199, where there was more drama outside the cage then inside (and that's saying something given all the incredible fights we witnessed that night), it's comforting to think maybe this event won't feel so bonkers. UFC arrives in Ottawa for the first time and comes packing a pretty fun fight card on paper. Headlining the event is a fantastic fight between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson, in what will most likely be a number one contenders match. Also on the card is an intriguing match between Donald Cerrone and Patrick Cote. The rest of the card includes popular fighters like Steve Bosse, Olivoer Aubin-Mercier, Valerie Letourneau and Joanne Calderwood.

UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson Predictions

If you haven't been keeping up with the MMA landscape you might be a little confused about what you're seeing right now. Wasn't Cain Velasquez suppose to get his rematch with Fabricio Werdum? Yes, this was true, but Cain suffered a back injury and had to pull out of fight. You may be asking, well couldn't they find someone to fight Werdum in Cain's place (great idea by the way, you're really on top of things today). They tried to match up Stipe Miocic with Werdum, but it turned out Werdum was injured himself this whole time and wasn't going to say anything...well until he found out Cain was also injured. With no main event it was the UFC that had to do some shuffling this weekend and now we're getting a pretty decent card on Fox Sports 1. Headlining is a really interesting fight between former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks and rising star Stephen Thompson. We also get to see a couple of the big boys tussle when Roy Nelson throws down with Jared Rosholt.

The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale: Ellenberger vs. Thompson

Between Invicta on Thursday, UFC 189 on Saturday and then the TUF finale on Sunday, there are alot of fights packed into a weekend.  Ladies and gentlemen we need to be serious for second.  By the time McGregor has dispatched of Mendes, Stef and Marc have downed about six yard drinks each, Phil has had his share of birthday celebrations, and Bobby tries to find another girl who looks like Bellatrix Lestrange, it's going to be the middle night on Sunday with but a few hours before the morning sun peaks over the horizon, signaling the end of a long weekend.  Well at least in a normal weekend because for some reason the UFC has booked another card IN THE SAME CITY less than 16 hours later.  What type of hungover, half empty arena are they expecting these guys to be fighting in front of?  It's as if six months ago due to a clerical error they double booked MGM grand for the 11th and 12th and couldn't get out of the rental and thought "fuck it, we'll just have two cards back to back." The main event should be entertaining and we will be seeing the UFC debut of the former Invicta atomweight champion Michelle "The Karate Hottie" Waterson who already owns a victory over recent title contender Jessica Penne.  I'm making these picks quick and dirty. Have You Been “Wondering” About The Newest MMA Sensation?

The following is a guest post by Jason "Orange Dawg" Helm. As you will see below, Orange Dawg has a unique perspective on this up and coming star in the UFC welterweight division.

This post is going to provide a little background info on the newest rising star in the UFC, Stephen “The Wonderboy” Thompson. Before I go any further, I just wanted to say thank you to Doctor Law and everybody else at It’s MMAzing for allowing me to post about this up and coming fighter.

By way of information about yours truly, I have four black belts in various styles of martial arts. I hold the rank of third degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and a first degree black belt in American Jiu-Jitsu. I studied martial arts at Upstate Karate in Simpsonville, SC. This just happens to be the same studio that has produced the Wonderboy. His father, Ray Thompson is the owner and founder of Upstate Karate. I grew up training with Stephen and followed his amateur kickboxing career with great interest. After all, it’s not every day that someone who used to kick my ass on a weekly basis was taking the kickboxing world by storm.

Wonderboy got his first black belt a couple of years before I did and I can tell you first hand that even the adults who studied under Ray Thompson did not want to spar with Stephen because even at ten years old he would whoop the sh*t out of them. As I advanced further up the ranks in my training, I was forced to train with Stephen more and more and every time I had to spar with him, I came home with fresh bruises that would take days to heal. You see, Karate was his life. He was born for it and excelled in every aspect of his training. His father was a world champion in his youth and was so talented that other instructors throughout South Carolina would no longer fight him in competition. Stephen embraced this heritage and longed to one day be better than his father.

When I got my black belt, we had to choose a partner who would help test us during the trials. The black belt exam at Upstate Karate used to take a week, with every candidate being tested on a certain aspect every day. For example, Mondays used to be combinations, punching and kicking, etc. Tuesdays used to be katta days. Thursdays were always the sparring days. My best friend at the time, Bobby Schmidt, had picked Stephen to be the one to test with him all week and Stephen did his job better than most. During the sparing day, Stephen broke my friend’s nose, almost causing him to fail his exam. That was just the type of fighter Wonderboy was. There was no quit and no taking it easy. He made you prove yourself every time you stepped into the ring with him. During that same exam, I was rotated in front of Stephen and ended up with a black eye for my trouble. He was the best and it seems that that has not changed all these years later.
