UFC Fight Night: Rothwell vs. Dos Santos Predictions

I'm still so angry from the nonsense the other three fools said during the last podcast.  Not about anything MMA related,  but from the fact they revealed they can't be trusted when it comes to their super hero movie tastes.  The fact they did not agree with me that "Batman vs. Superman; Dawn of Justice"  wasn't the hottest of gaaabage (that's right gaabage, not garbage...garbage would be too good for it).  I may or may not air some more of my grievances I didn't get to in my long rant on the last show so be forewarned in case you haven't seen that travesty of a movie.  But you aren't reading this blog to hear me complain about my loss of respect for my fellow bloggers.  This Saturday features four heavyweights we know pretty well and the rest of the card consists of virtual unknowns.  I've had to go back and actually find the fight pass prelim fights or fights on YouTube to know what the hell I'm talking about with these guys.  That is what you get from a card in Eastern Europe that's airing in the early afternoon on a Sunday.

UFC on Fox: dos Anjos vs. Cerrone II Predictions

Coming off a maddening week of UFC events is the last card of the year...and what a card it is! Fox is hosting the first title defense of the newly crowded UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos when he rematches the surging Donald Cerrone. Also we'll get the highly anticipated heavyweight showdown between the former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos and former K-1 Grand Prix Champion Alistair Overreem. In addition there's a solid lightweight scrap between Michael Johnson and fan favorite Nate Diaz.

UFC on FOX: dos Santos v. Miocic Predictions

The UFC returns to "Big" Fox this Saturday night with a five round heavyweight main event between the clear #2 guy in the division and a young guy from Ohio looking for his big break. We also get the return of the younger Diaz brother, a horse-eating Dutchman, another Dutchman with anxiety issues and a heavyweight with enough body hair to play Cousin It. Not bad for free TV.

Junior dos Santos v. Stipe Miocic 

Cigano is back. We haven’t seen JDS since he took a world class ass kicking from Cain Velasquez last October. Junior dos Santos basically seems like the nicest guy in the world. That almost makes it more terrifying that he is perfectly capable of knocking your head off your shoulders with one swing. Stipe Miocic is coming off of a ridiculous match-up with Fabio Maldonado that Brazilian commission should be ashamed for licensing. Stipe is a very good wrestler with some solid striking, but he's out of his depth in this fight. The heavyweight division is pretty simple:

Mr. Miocic is going to get smoked pretty damn fast. JDS by 2nd round knockout.

UFC 166 Predictions

When asked Cain Velasquez said that this is most likely not the last time he and Junior Dos Santos face each other.  Junior on the other hand believes this will be the last time.  Not exclusive to the realm of fighting, three is a number that is huge in our collective psyches.  Three strikes you’re out, the holy trinity(for you Catholics), Neapolitan ice cream, and more movie trilogies than can be counted here.  So there is some credence that’s lent to the notion that this will be the last fight.  But there’s a huge exception, if we’re left wanting more then there MUST be a fourth fight.  Whether we get a fourth will be determined on whether Junior can either win the belt or make it a close and compelling fight.

Cain Velasquez (c) v. Antonio Silva

UFC 146. Do you remember it? It wasn't that long ago. Today is actually one year to the day of that event. Why is this significant? It's because that was the date Cain Velasquez turned a UFC fight into a God damn horror movie. He brutalized this guy named Antonio Silva and left him in a pool of his own blood. One year later...they're fighting again. Mostly due to lack of options. I'm going to go out on a limb as say that Cain is probably going to take this one.

Junior Dos Santos v. Mark Hunt

The #RallyforMarkHunt has paid off in a big way. The big man is now fighting JDS for a shot at the UFC title. Does he have what it takes to beat Cigano. Yes. Mark Hunt could knock out a rhino. I am so excited for this fight that there is NO possible way that it can live up.

UFC 155 Predictions

Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Championship
Junior Dos Santos (c) v. Cain Velasquez

Doctor Law: The second of what I hope will be many fights between these two great heavyweights. The first one left much to be desired and really answered no questions. Both guys having fairly significant injuries almost makes you want to throw the result out for the first match up. I think everybody knows what each guy is planning on doing in this fight. Junior is going to want to keep it standing while Cain will hope to take Junior down and beat him up there. I think Cain will get Junior down, but Junior will find a way back to his feet. This is close call, but I think I’m going with the champ to repeat. I also want to see happy JDS. That’s always pretty funny. JDS by 3^rd round TKO.

DJ Mark with a "K": Their first fight was so short that it’s difficult to take away a lot from it. The one thing we learned is that Junior has the power to stop Cain early in the fight, which isn’t all that surprising but is still a very important factor.  I thought Cain’s strategy in the first fight was a pretty decent one (he seemed to be focusing on leg kicks to counter the distance of a boxer like Junior) but was also putting himself in a lot of danger. This time around I would think Cain would try a different approach and try to make this a grappling match. Cain’s bread and butter is wrestling and I think using those skills is the safest way for him to get his title back. The problem is that Junior is extremely good at staying off his back. It’ll be interesting to see if Cain is able to get the match on the ground and if he has the skill to keep Junior there. I fear if Cain can’t gain control of this fight by either getting it to the ground or pushing Junior up against the fence it’ll just be a matter of time till Junior can lay his hands on Cain and retain his title. Since I have yet to see anyone be able to use this type of game plan against Junior I’m siding with him. Junior via 2^nd round TKO 2:31.

Kid Presentable: First things first, no matter who wins here, these are the top two heavyweights in the world. Even if Cain gets put to sleep a minute into the fight once more, I still wouldn’t hesitate to pick him to smash the rest of the division. That said, I think we’ll see something a little different this time. Cain is a smart and fast evolving fighter. Everyone and their mother knows the big question mark is what if Cain took the fight to the mat? It will be interesting to see Cain’s game plan because you can’t just simply take it to the mat, you have to train how you are going to set up taking your shot. JDS has some of the most successful take down defense in the division and even then he has long trained under the Nogueiras and won’t be helpless if it goes there. I really hope that Cain takes this just to keep this feud going, because if there are any two fighters deserving of more than just a trilogy of fights, it’s these two guys here. Overall though, I can’t really pick Cain until he proves that he can take down and neutralize JDS biggest weapons. Cain so far has proven to be quite hitable in every one of his fights, and Overeem is probably the only other guy in the division that hits this hard. JDS by TKO round 3.

Lavender Gooms:I think to call Cain the number #1 contender would be an insult to just how good he really is.  In the heavyweight division Junior Dos Santos and Cain are 1 and 1A.  Both of these fighters are young(ish) and extremely talented. This might be premature, but I think this could be the beginning of the first true rivalry in MMA on the same level as Ali-Frazier. I would not be surprised if the heavyweight title changes hands between the two of them three or four times in the next five years.  There is no denying that JDS caught him (very well) in their fight a year ago and dropped him very early in their fight.  However I attribute that more to Cain losing his head for a bit and trying to stand with an extremely feared striker and being much more hesitant than he has ever been.  This time around I see Cain using the high level wrestling he wasn’t able to use in the first fight.  I think Cain wins this time, mainly because you can’t have a good rivalry stating off 0-2 right? Velasquez by TKO in 3^rd round.

UFC 146 Predictions

UFC Heavyweight Championship:
Junior Dos Santos (c) v. Frank Mir

Doctor Law: This card has had a lot of twists and turns. The biggest one was Alistair Overeem confirming everybody’s suspicions about him and getting himself kicked off this card (“removed myself” my ass Alistair). Frank Mir steps in for Alistair and has the opportunity to become a three time UFC champion. Unfortunately for him, he is facing a very uphill battle. JDS has been on a tear and the only way Mir wins this fight is to somehow get this fight to ground. If it gets there, Junior is screwed. I don’t care how solid JDS’s ground game is; Mir will start ripping body parts off if you go to the ground with him. Fortunately for the champ, the fight starts standing. JDS by 1st round KO.

Kid Presentable: First off, Frank Mir absolutely deserves this shot. He has been on a nice strong win streak and is a former champion himself. It just lacks the sex bombness that was the Reem vs JDS. Mir might be the most dangerous man on the mat in the division, but JDS has some very impressive takedown defense. In Mir's previous fight, by all means Big Nog should have put him away, but his hubris and decision to go for the sub got the best of him. JDS will not make that mistake. Combine that with better hand speed and greater power, and Frank will have a short night before he takes a nap. Junior by KO round 1.

DJ Mark with a “K”: While it’s sad that Reem got popped for elevated levels of manliness Mir is a decent last minute replacement. UFC has done a good job playing up the” revenging the master” angle (Mirs last win was over JDS's coach/mentor) but on paper I got JDS all over this one. His punching power has been unmatched so far in his UFC run and a lot of people question Mir's stand up/chin/heart, as I do. This isn’t a complete blow out though since I think Mir can sub anyone when it hits the mat, I just don’t think he’ll be able to get it there and keep JDS long enough to crank an arm or wrap up a choke. JDS by KO 2nd Rnd.

Lavender Gooms: Frank Mir is a bad dude. You have GOT to be a bad dude to get rocked like he was against Noguiera, get taken to the ground and somehow flip it so that you’re the one breaking arms and getting the W. I’ve got nothing but props and respect for Mir and I do not believe it would be as big a upset if Mir were to win as some may believe it to be….But Junior is going to put it on him. Junior’s striking is on or above any level Mir has experienced AND that hand speed will leave Mir guessing. I don’t see Mir having much of a chance to get it to the ground where he has his best chance of pulling out the win. I like Mir, but after he’s been knocked out in the first round, I’ll really be wishing Overeem wasn’t too much man for mortal testosterone tests. Dos Santos by TKO in 1st round.

Cain Velasquez v. Antonio Silva

Doctor Law: Velasquez was originally supposed to be taking on Mir in this fight, but now takes on the Big Foot Silva. No one thinks more highly of Big Foot Silva than Silva himself. I just watched the preview show where he said he had the "best striking, best BJJ and best wrestling" in the heavyweight division. He is wrong about all of that. Very wrong. Cain is going to throw shade all over Big Foot ( just learned that phrase this week…I had to use it). Cain by 2nd round TKO.

Kid Presentable: Cain is the better striking, more experienced Daniel Cormier. I expect Cain to style all over Bigfoot just as DC did in their previous bout. Unfortunately the history and track record of Bigfoot's fights implies that even in victory Cain is probably going to walk away with a broken hand from that big ass dome of Silva's. Cain by TKO, round 2.

DJ Mark with a “K”: Another fight that got changed around, but still manages to be interesting on paper. Cain is the easy favorite in this one as Big Foot has been inconsistent when facing top competition. The real question is how long into the fight in till Cain breaks his hand on Big Foot stone like skull. If Cain can get out of the fight without breaking his hand that will be a true victory. Cain by TKO 1st rnd.

Lavender Gooms: In his last fight, Silva lost to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce GP. In his next fight he gets Cormier’s training partner, who just happens to be the former Heavyweight champ. Whatever Silva is good at, Cain is better(except BJJ). Silva won’t be able to keep Cain down so his jiu-jistu won’t come into play in this fight. Cain’s biggest worry in the fight is figuring out how not to break his hand on Silva’s adamantium encased skull. While there will be a Big Foot sighting on Saturday, it will only be brief. Cain by TKO in the 2nd round.
