UFC Fight Night 101: Whittaker vs Brunson Picks and Thanksgiving Thoughts

I think DJ Mark said it best, if there was a ever a time and a card to skip from the UFC... well, this was probably it. Yet here we are all the same and honestly the main event is pretty dang solid. The top of the division is pretty much at a log jam right now, but no harm in figuring out who our next contenders may be in late 2017 to early 2018. The least we can do though, is spare you too much mularkey about the rest of this fight card, because in typical boxing fashion, the main event is all that really matters here. And really folks, whether with family, friends, shopping out there like a maniac, or maybe just enjoying a sweet nap, there are probably a lot better options out there for you to spend your post-Thanksgiving Saturday. But if you find yourself with an itch for combat sports violence, well you have come to right place... kind of. For one fight at least...

Robert Whittaker vs Derek Brunson
Congrats on 2 years @robwhittakermma

Potentially lost in the post UFC 205 and Thankgiving "itis" hangovers, is a sneaky good match up of future middleweight contenders. Rob defied a lot of odds by going up a division and looking the best he ever has. He carries tremendous hand speed and KO power. Meanwhile, Derek Brunson has quietly been on one of the hottest streaks in the company. His only UFC losses have come to the upper tier of the division. Additionally, while in my head I tend to think of Brunson as a wrestler, he can still throw hands as seen in last 4 fights, none of which went to the bell. So why am I picking Whittaker exactly, the longer I write this the more I am not entirely sure. Ultimately, I think this is almost a coin toss match and I can really see either man taking the win here. I favor Whittaker simply out of personal preference, his style is more fan friendly and why not cheer for the home crowd to get one? Whittaker by KO.

Whittaker: Gooms, Kid P
Brunson: DJ Mark, Doc Law

Post Thanksgiving thoughts...

Now if you're still with me, that's awesome, amazing, and kind of insane. You must really be dear personal friends at this point. Anyways, maybe it's the bourbon, maybe it's the multiple plates of food still sitting somewhere in my intestines, or maybe it's still the jet lag I haven't shaken off from Asia, but here I am sharing some post holiday thoughts. It's been a weird time the last month or so, and I think we can all agree the biggest goal of getting together with family yesterday was simply; "don't talk about politics." That was largely a success on my end of the world, but at the same time you can't ignore what has been going on. It's is a potentially scary time ahead as it may signal a stepping back by decades in this nation which may cause irreparable damage. As Coach Popovich poignantly stated, "We are Rome." Or perhaps many heroes will rise as they always have in the face of adversity. It is always darkest before the dawn as they also say. I also can't deny the battle for justice out in Standing Rock has made this particular holiday somewhat uncomfortable to unify. But at the same time, to what it can additionally mean in this modern day, I am very thankful for my family. Particularly my mother. She's meant and contributed the world to me to the best of her ability, and that is all that anyone can ask of and ask for. It is what we should all strive for in the days ahead. Let us help one another, let us care about one another. Trying times are ahead. Hateful times are ahead. So let's get through this together. Our prime purpose in life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.

Lighter post-Thanksgivng thoughts...

If I am to make one bad Black Friday shopping choice, do I go with Battlefield for $35? Or do I pony up for the $60 special addition of Call of Duty simply cause I want the remaster of Modern Warfare??? That is quite the entirely unimportant dilemma. Tweet at me if you got the answer! @stefonzey

Stay safe everyone. Eat, be merry, shop your hearts off.
